The Science: What is it doing?

It activates your Bromine.
If you use a Bromine system (common in wood tubs), Spa Shock is essential. Bromine creates a "bank" of dormant sanitizer in the water. Spa Shock reactivates this bank, turning useless "spent" bromine back into active bacteria-killing bromine. It recycles your chemicals!

It prevents "Lock." Over time, contaminants build up and "lock" your sanitizer, making it useless no matter how much you add. Regular oxidizing prevents this lock, ensuring you get maximum value out of your Chlorine or Bromine tablets.
